20. Jill Dando (9th November 1961 - 26th April 1999) - an English journalist and television presenter who worked for the BBC for more than fifteen years.

It was her involvement in the police show Crimewatch, however, that has been linked to her death. Shot on the doorstep of her London home, at around 11.30am, Jill was declared dead by the time she reached hospital.



21. Jim Morrison (8th December 1943 - 3rd July 1971) - an American singer, poet, songwriter, writer, and film director.

The charismatic lead singer of The Doors died at the age of 27. He was living in Paris, France at the time of his death, and was found in the bathtub of his apartment by his girlfriend at the time, Pamela Courson.

No autopsy was performed, but foul play was ruled out. A doctor's report said the cause of death was heart failure, aggravated by heavy drinking. Today his gravesite in France is still visited by hordes of fans and tourists.



22. Jimi Hendrix (27th November 1942 – 18th September 1970) - an American guitarist, singer and songwriter.

The American guitarist and singer was found dead in a basement flat of a hotel in London's Lansdowne Crescent.

Reports said he choked on his own vomit, after drinking and taking 10 sleeping pills.



23. Karen Carpenter (2nd March 1950 - 4th February 1983) - a highly successful American singer and drummer.

One half of 1970s sibling duo The Carpenters, Karen was a talented singer and drummer. She suffered from anorexia, which was little known of at the time, eventually dying from complications related to recovery from the illness at the age of 32.



24. Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes (27th May 1971 - 25th April 2002) - an American rapper, singer, songwriter and member of the popular R&B group TLC.

Known by her stage name, Left Eye, TLC star Lisa was killed in a car accident in Honduras aged 30.



25. Lolo Ferrari (9th February 1963 - 6th March 2000) - a French dancer, actress and singer billed as "the woman with the largest breasts in the world", though their size was artificially achieved.

The French dancer and actress, whose large breasts received much attention, was found dead in her home on the French Riviera.

Some reports say she died from an overdose of prescription drugs, while others hinted at natural causes.



26. Mama Cass (19th September 1941 - 29th July 1974) - a noted American singer, best remembered as Mama Cass of the pop quartet The Mamas & the Papas.

While legend has it she died after choking on a ham sandwich, an autopsy revealed that no food was found in her windpipe and the cause of death was determined as a heart attack, causing her to die in her sleep.



27. Marc Bolan (30th September 1947 - 16th September 1977) - an English singer, songwriter and guitarist whose hit singles, fashion sensibilities and stage presence with T.Rex in the early 1970s helped cultivate the glam rock era and made him one of the most recognisable stars in British music of the time.

Marc was killed in a car accident in London aged 29.



28. Marilyn Monroe (1st June 1926 - 5th August 1962) - a Golden Globe award winning American actress, model, Hollywood icon, and sex symbol.

The movie star sweetheart of the 50s and 60s, Marilyn was found at her home in Brentwood, California. While some reports say the official cause of her death was listed as "acute barbiturate poisoning" by a doctor from the LA county coroner's office, her death was classified as a probable suicide, because a lack of evidence meant it could not be ruled a suicide or homicide.



29. Michael Hutchence (22nd January 1960 - 22nd November 1997) - the original lead singer of the Australian rock band INXS.

Found dead in a Sydney hotel room with a belt by his side, there was some debate at the time as to the cause of his death - with his family ruling out suicide.

Details later emerged that Michael had been found naked, prompting speculation that he accidentally died from erotic asphyxiation.



30. Nancy Spungen (27th February 1958 - 12th October 1978) - the girlfriend of Sex Pistols bassist Sid Vicious.

Most famous for being Sid Vicious' girlfriend, it was this relationship that ultimately killed her. Although it has never been confirmed that Sid murdered her, Nancy was found dead in their New York hotel room with a single stab wound - which came from Sid's knife.



31. Ol'Dirty Bastard (15th November 1968 - 13th November 2004) - an American rapper.

The American rapper, real name Russell Tyrone Jones and often referred to as ODB, was initially believed to have died from unknown causes. But final autopsy results showed that at the time of his death he had a lethal combination of a prescription painkiller and large amounts of cocaine in his system. The New York Medical Examiner's Office ruled his death an accidental overdose.



32. Otis Redding (9th September 1941 - 10th December 1967) - an influential American deep soul singer, best known for his passionate delivery and posthumous hit single, "(Sittin' on) the Dock of the Bay."

The American soul singer, crooner of the hit tune Dock Of The Bay, died in a plane crash, when a chartered plane he was on came down into Lake Monona in Wisconsin.



33. Patsy Cline (8th September 1932 - 5th March 1963) - an American country music singer, who enjoyed pop music crossover success during the era of the Nashville Sound in the early 1960s.

One of the most acclaimed female vocalists of the 20th century, Patsy's life was cut short when she was killed in a plane crash at the age of 30.



34. Richard Beckinsale (6th July 1947 - 19th March 1979) - an English actor best known for his role as Lennie Godber in the popular BBC sitcom Porridge.

He died aged 31 from a heart attack.



35. River Phoenix (23rd August 1970 - 31st October 1993) - an Academy Award- and Golden Globe-nominated American film actor.

River died of a heroin and cocaine overdose on Halloween morning. He was just 23 years old when he died outside the Viper Room, a nightclub in Hollywood that was partly owned by Johnny Depp until a couple of years ago.



36. Sharon Tate (24th January 1943 – 9th August 1969) - a Golden Globe-nominated American actress.

The American award-winning actress was murdered in Los Angeles by members of Charles Manson's cult. The actress made a name for herself in movies like Valley Of The Dolls.

At the time of her death she was married to director Roman Polanski, and was eight and a half months pregnant.



37. Sid Vicious (10th May 1957 - 2nd February 1979) - an English punk musician, the bass player of the Sex Pistols

The London-born Sex Pistols bass player died of a heroin overdose. His autopsy apparently confirmed he died from an accumulation of fluid on the lungs, which is characteristic of heroin abuse.



38. Sylvia Plath (27th October 1932 - 11th February 1963) - an American poet, novelist, and short story writer.

After separating from her husband, poet Ted Hughes, in the early 1960s, Sylvia increasingly conveyed her mental anguish via writing and poetry.

Semi-autobiographical novel The Bell Jar is probably her best known work. She gassed herself by putting her head in an oven.
